‘Tis the season for holiday indulgences like sugary treats and beverages. It is common for folks to worry about the effects these treats can have on their waistlines, but the often over-looked danger is what candies and cookies can do to our teeth. While it is fine to indulge in a few of your seasonal favorites, it is important to understand the effect sugar has on your teeth so you’ll know what precautions you should take to protect them.
When you eat, the digestive process actually begins in your mouth with the healthy bacteria that helps to break down the food you eat as you chew. The breakdown actually continues after you swallow, as the bacteria continue to work on food residue that is left in your mouth. Unfortunately, when this good bacteria encounters sugars, it breaks those sugars down into acids. These acids have a corrosive and damaging affect on tooth enamel. Caramels, hard sugars and other sticky sweets are especially problematic because the residue stays in your mouth longer, prolonging your teeth’s exposure to the corrosive acid created by the sugar.
Our tips for maintaining healthy teeth and a healthy diet include over the holidays:
- When enjoying festive sugary drinks and cocktails, enjoy a glass of water before having a refill.
- Before you take your first bite of treats, establish limit for yourself and stick to it.
- If possible, brush and floss when you are done eating sweets. Not only will this clean your mouth, it will curb your desire to eat more.
- Eat less of the sticky treats like caramel and taffy.
- Instead of going for straight for the cookie platter, have some veggies and dip or other nonsugary snacks first. This will help you to eat less of the sugar.
These tips will help you feel well and keep your smile bright during all of your holiday celebrations!
