Receding gums are no fun for many reasons. Ignoring them in the hopes they’ll heal on their own can complicate matters. Your best bet at resolution is to collaborate with your dentist on which steps to take next. Drs. Michelle and Scott Weninger work closely with patients to address concerns of receding gums.
What could be causing gum recession?
Gingival tissues (gums) protect the roots of the teeth. When the amount of gum tissue protecting the roots decreases, this recession can cause pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, there is not a cure-all for gum recession. It is vital to figure out the cause of your gum recession before proper treatment can be implemented.
Common causes of gum recession:
- Poor oral health habits – When plaque is not removed, it can build up under the gum line and result in periodontal disease. Left unchecked, gum disease can cause worsening gum recession over time.
- Aggressive tooth brushing – Brush and floss smarter, not harder! Only choose soft-bristled brushes. Gentle brushing flossing removes plaque and food particles without damaging gums.
- Genes – Ask your parents if they have dealt with receding gums. If the answer is yes, there’s a good chance gum recession will happen to you.
- Injury – Anytime an injury happens to a tooth, the trauma may result in receding gums.
- Misaligned teeth – When teeth overlap or do not line-up with one another, it can put undo stress on the gums and cause them to recede.
- Bruxism (teeth grinding) – Grinding your teeth can damage teeth in many ways. It wears the tops, can cause cracks or chips, and can even cause headaches. Receding gums may also be an unfortunate side effect of nighttime teeth grinding.
