Weninger Dentistry provides inlays and onlays for tooth restoration that requires more than a filling, but is not severe enough to require a crown. Inlays and onlays solve dental problems without having to compromise tooth enamel of the tooth to be restored or the surrounding teeth.
Dental inlays and onlays involve the same type of restoration, however they are used on different areas of the tooth. A dental inlay fills the area in between the cusps, or rounded edges, at the center of the tooth surface. Like the inlay, the onlay covers the tooth, but is used for one or more cusps or the entire biting surface of the tooth. Due to their extensive coverage, dental onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns.
During the initial appointment the tooth is prepared through the removal of any tooth decay. After the tooth is prepared, an impression is made of the treatment area, which is used to create the inlay or onlay. A temporary dental filling is used to preserve the tooth following this process, and is removed when the inlay or onlay is cemented onto the tooth.
To help protect dental inlays and onlays, patients should continue a dedicated regimen of good oral hygiene. As with all teeth, teeth with inlays and onlays should be kept free of plaque to keep them clean and healthy. Regularly brushing and flossing are the best care to help remove plaque and food from in between teeth. In addition to a daily oral hygiene routine, it will be a good idea to see us regularly for a check up to ensure your teeth and gums are as clean and healthy as possible.
